A Rainy Day in Florence

This morning when I woke up the rain was coming down in buckets and it was a very cool morning again. After waking up, I took my class schedule and my handy dandy map that I was given at orientation to navigate the route from academic building to academic building. Most of the classroom buildings are spread throughout the city, but at least I will be getting plenty of exercise walking from point a to point b. Tuesdays between my two classes is going to be my biggest challenge. I have 15 minutes between classes to get from polar opposite ends of the city. Luckily, Firenze is a small city and I am hoping that once I get my bearings straight I will be able to do the walk with my eyes closed. On the way back from finding classes, I walked through a market in the middle of a square. The square was overwhelmed with the aroma of fresh basil and filled native italians buying fresh produce, blocks of cheese, and hand crafted items. I made it home just in time before the skies decided to open up. As I looked out my window I saw people wearing colorful ponchos as they rode on their vespas, running through the streets with their umbrellas, and cars windshield wipers going a million miles per hour. I also got to FaceTime with my Aunt Debbi and my grandpa today, which made me really happy! I was able to share my experience with them that I have had thus far.

My roommates and I all got dressed and went to church at the Duomo. Every Saturday evening at 5 o'clock, mass is held in English at the Duomo. It was my first time being inside the Duomo since I have been here. The architecture, the painted ceilings, and the stained glass windows were so surreal.

After Church my roommates and I all came home to cook our first big meal together in our tiny nook we call our kitchen. I diced up some garlic to add extra flavor to our fresh veggies and sauteed and seasoned chicken cutlets we had prepared. Since I have been here, I have been introduced to Balsamic Glaze, and it has become a staple in my Italian diet. The Balsamic Glaze is nothing like our balsamic back in the USA and tastes good on almost anything. So far I have tried it on pasta, chicken, bread, vegetables, and fruit. When someone first suggested I try it on strawberries I thought it would not be so appetizing, but it turned out to be delicious!

After dinner we went for a stroll along the Arno River and of course had gelato! Tonight I tried the caffe flavor and it tasted like I was drinking the creamiest frappuccino from Starbucks. At the gelataria we met an older couple who is from Kentucky. They were so interested in what we were studying, how long we were going to be here, and our plans for our time here. After enjoying some delicious gelato, I went to hang out with some friends at Steve & Trevor's apartment. Tomorrow as part of orientation we are going on a trip to Pisa! I can't wait to see what Pisa has to add to my Italian Adventure!
